Nisyros is an island about 40 minutes boat ride from Kardemena, it's main feature is it's volcano, which is described (worryingly) as semi-active. Less worrying is the knowledge that it hasn't blown for at least 25,000 years.
This isn't Nisyros at all, I thought I'd throw in a picture looking back at Kardemena harbour from the boat.
This is the small town on Nisyros where we docked, I've no idea what it's called.
From the town we took the bus up the hills and then back down the hills onto a large plain. At the far end of the plain was the crater, this is looking down into that crater. From the moment the bus went down onto the plain the whole place stank of rotten eggs.
The hills formed a rim around the entire plain, it must have been quite a large mountain before the top was blown off.
Some more of the hills aound the plain.
You can clearly see the yellow sulphur deposits in the layers of rock on the side of the crater.
We walked down a rocky path to the bottom of the crater, the view that greeted us was more like a moonscape.
A pool of warm gloopy mud, the mud was all over the this part of the ground and was very slippy to walk on.
A pool of gloopy mud making a "gloop!!" sound.
There were lots of holes in the side of the crater spewing out hot, smelly, choking sulphuric gases. You didn't want to stay near these for too long.
The smell I had to bear to bring you this picture! |
